Since they have traveled many miles and many hands have touched them, Once your diapers arrive, you’ ll want to separate the insert from the pocket opening.
Wash and dry the inserts 3 – 5 times before use to “prep” them to absorb more. The outer shells (the colored and Inner-y part) only need to be washed once before use.

YIFASHION baby cloth diapers are more breathable than disposable diapers, and they tend to get changed more frequently,which means that most cloth diapered babies get less diaper rash, if any at all, than babies who are in disposables.
If babies in cloth diapers are not immune to diaper rash, the best way to prevent rashes is to change your baby’s diaper often – as soon as it is soiled or wet, and to give baby’s bum some “fresh air” exposure from time to time.
If you notice that your baby has developed a rash all of a sudden, it could be due to a detergent or urine residue in the diapers.
If your baby develops a rash that you suspect may be an infection or fungus, you should consult with your health care provider
The actual washing process for your diapers is pretty simple. With the addition of a couple of extra rinse cycles, it is basically like washing anything else!
First Wash
When you first get your new cloth diapers, wash them in warm water (under 86F) once with detergent before your baby wears them.This will remove any chemicals or other substances left over from manufacturing, as well as soften them and help them shrink to the right size for your baby. The softer the diaper, the more absorbent they are!
Fabrics like organic and unbleached cotton, as well as hemp products can require a few washes before they reach maximum absorbency. My advice? While it can take a few hot water washes to achieve this, you can go with using the diapers after just 1 wash.
NOTE: Don’t use fabric softener, EVER. That will coat the fabric fibers and prevent them from fluffing to full absorbency.
Everyday Washing
Before throwing your diapers in the washer, make sure all solid waste is out of your baby’s diaper and that all of your diapers are open so that the soiled areas will be cleaned. Remove inserts and/or prefolds from their outer covers to make sure they are thoroughly cleaned as well. Don’t overload your machine. About two dozen diapers per load works well, the load can vary depending on your washing machine. When using a laundromat, you can load more diapers.
Step 1: Run the diapers through a short warm-water rinse cycle (or prewash, if your washer has such a setting) with detergent. This will pull out any of the solids leftover in the soiled diapers and keep them from staining.
Step 2: Once the prewash is complete, set your washer to a hot wash (up to 140F/60C) with a cold or warm rinse. Use the prescribed amount of laundry detergent recommended on the manufacturer’s instructions. If you have hard water, add a water softener such as Calgon.
When the wash is finished, examine your diapers. Make sure that they’re clean and smell good. If they aren’t clean and still smell bad, rewash them, using a hot wash and cold or warm rinse.
Step 3: Now your diapers are nice and clean, put them in the dryer in warm or hot setting (up to 140F).
Now you’ve got a pile of fresh and clean diapers, all you have to do is stuff them (depending on the style) and/or put them away!
Repeat every 2-3 days.
Avoid using fabric softeners, dryer sheets, or diaper rash creams. They leave a waxy residue on the fabric, making them less absorbent, and more likely to cause leaks and rashes
How much detergent should I use? Make sure you are using enough, otherwise your diapers won’t get clean. Follow the prescribed amounts on the detergent’s packaging. Using too little will cause your diapers to stink, and too much detergent can leave residue that will cause diapers to stink and leak.
Do I have to wash covers separately?
Our diaper covers can be washed and dried with your diapers. Line drying will extend the life of the cover longer, but occasional dryer run is fine too.
Do I have to “dunk”? Nope! There’s no need to dunk your diaper in the toilet before washing.
If your baby is exclusively breastfed you don’t need to rinse the diaper at all – the poop will wash right out. If your older baby is eating solid foods, then you will need to dump most of the solid waste into the toilet before washing.
Some parents keep a scraper under the bathroom sink and scrape the solid waste into the toilet, while others buy a diaper sprayer that attaches to the toilet.
After the bulk of the waste is off the diaper, follow the same wash routine.
Should I use a wet or dry diaper pail?
We recommend a dry pail, because a wet pail can breed bacteria that can be hazardous to your home. A regular kitchen-style garbage can with a closing lid works best for cloth diapers.
Choosing the Right Cloth Diapers.
1.Test a few options before you buy a batch of cloth diapers. They come in different forms and features.
2.All-in-one diapers (AIOs) are most like disposables. They are made with the absorbent cloth inside next to your babies skin, and a PUL cover attached to the outside.
3.Use pre-fold diapers for simplicity. These are rectangular in shape and divide by length into 3 sections.
Follow the divisions that show you how to fold, and use a Diaper safety pin, or a snappi (stretchy plastic T shaped thing with teeth) to hold the diaper together, or place a diaper cover that snaps over it.
4.Try a pocket cloth diaper for extra protection against wetness. This type of diaper has a waterproof exterior and a pocket where you put the insert.
Shop for extra inserts (also called soakers) that will fit any diaper size. These provide the baby with extra protection for nap and nighttime.
5.Use a fitted cloth diaper. Perfect for nighttime because the front, back, and side tabs hold pee where any other type of diaper does not. They usually fasten with snaps or Velcro, and are easy to take on and off.
Fitted diapers need a cover.Place a diaper cover over a fitted cloth diaper, flat or prefold diaper to keep them from leaking.
Wool diaper covers are great for nighttime use also instead of a PUL cover. Just be sure to read about washing and applying lanolin to waterproof them.
Buying Enough Cloth Diapers
1.Remember that a newborn requires 10 to 12 changes per day, and older infants and toddlers will need 8 to 10 changes.
2.Pay attention to sizing. Many brands offer a “one-size” diaper that will fit after the newborn stage until potty training. One-size diapers save much more money than buying cloth diapers in many different sizes.
3.Think about how often you want to wash diapers. If you want to wash every 2 or 3 days, buy enough cloth diapers to keep your clean supply well stocked. Never leave dirty diapers unwashed for more than 3 days.
4.Buy necessary accessories. Such as diaper covers, extra inserts, Diaper liners (reusable, or disposable make cleaning poo much easier!) Snappies or pins, cloth diaper safe rash cream, a pail or bucket with a lid to store the dirty diapers.
5.Consider using your cloth diapers for other things. Some parents also use them for burp cloths, bibs and changing pads.
Cleaning Cloth Diapers
1.Change your baby as soon as you notice she is wet or soiled.
2.Remove a wet diaper and place it in a diaper pail for washing.
Rinse the wet diaper before placing it in the pail if you prefer. While this is not necessary, some parents prefer to rinse it out before placing it a pail to eliminate the odor of urine.
3.Allow your baby’s bottom to air dry. If you want, you can use a wet or dry wipe to clean the diaper area.
4.Remove a soiled diaper and clean the baby’s bottom with a soft damp wipe, consider buying a wipe warmer which is perfect for storing cloth wipes.
Shake solids into the toilet and flush. Rinse the diaper and place it in the diaper pail for washing. If your baby is having only breast milk, there is no need to rinse or dump because breast milk will be broken down in the wash waster.
Scrape unformed poop into the toilet with a spatula or other tool that is set aside for this specific purpose. Rinse the diaper to remove as much poop as you can, and place the diaper in the pail for washing.
5.Remove any diaper inserts, such as a soaking pad, before you wash them.
6.Start your wash cycle with a cold rinse (to prevent staining and rise out pee.) Then add a small amount of laundry soap to a hot wash (too much soap will cause build up, and your diaper will leak.) It helps to do an extra rinse to make sure there is no extra soap left in your diapers.
7.PUL covers need to be air dried. Anything else can be dried in the dryer.
8.Wool covers must be hand washed in cold water, and air dried.
